Volkswagen Tiguan Review | Tiguan Review

There is nothing new that the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Skoda Kodiaq are siblings, as they share the same platform, engine, and transmission. But these facts are known to a few, especially among Indian buyers. Moreover, there is also a price difference of Rs 3–4 lakh between these two full-size SUVs. But, with a different price, the Kodiaq makes up for the extra premium by offering a few more features over the Volkswagen Tiguan.

However, these two SUVs are reasonably doing well in the market. But the question remains: which is better? So, let’s find that out below.

Prices: Volkswagen Tiguan vs Skoda Kodiaq

Let’s begin with the parent company’s SUV. As for the Volkswagen Tiguan price, it has an average ex-showroom price of Rs 32,79,000. It is available in only one variant.

On the other hand, the Skoda Kodiaq has three variants.

The starting ex-showroom price of the Kodiaq is Rs 35,99,999 for the base model, Style Automatic. And, it goes up to Rs 38,49,000 for the top model, the L&K Automatic.

However, the similarly priced vehicles to the Volkswagen Tiguan are the Jeep Compass, Citroen C5 Aircross, and the Hyundai Tucson.

On the flip side, the Skoda Kodiaq takes on the likes of the MG Gloster, Toyota Fortuner, Jeep Meridian, and the Mahindra Alturas.

Powertrain: Volkswagen Tiguan vs Skoda Kodiaq

The Skoda Kodiaq specifications are the same as the Volkswagen Tiguan specifications. They both get a 1984cc four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 187bhp at 4200rpm and 320Nm of torque at 1500rpm.

They both come with an all-wheel-drivetrain. Furthermore, these two SUVs are exclusively available with a seven-speed DCT. The Volkswagen Tiguan and the Skoda Kodiaq’s mileage are 12.6 kmpl and 12.7 kmpl, respectively.

The Tiguan and the Kodiaq also have the same tyre profile of 235/55 R18.

Features: Volkswagen Tiguan vs Skoda Kodiaq

The Volkswagen Tiguan and the Skoda Kodiaq’s features are more or less identical.

Let’s start with the top model of the Skoda Kodiaq. It has ventilated front seats, but they are only made for winter since they don’t throw cool air. And in a country like India, cooled ventilated seats would have made much more sense. Apart from that, the Tiguan misses out on a few basic comfort features, such as seat lumbar support, smart access entry, glove box cooling, voice control, full autonomous parking, etc. Any customer who owns either of these two SUVs can enjoy the panoramic sunroof. Furthermore, the Tiguan gets a one-touch power window only on the driver’s side, and the Kodiaq gets it on all four windows. The Kodiaq also boasts front memory function seats, while the Tiguan has it only on the driver’s side.

However, the Volkswagen Tiguan misses out on front parking sensors, while the Kodiaq has them on both ends.

As for the exterior lighting, the Skoda Kodiaq gets front foglamps while the Tiguan doesn’t. The former also gets cornering fog lights, while the latter doesn’t. The Tiguan, however, boasts IQ LED matrix headlights. The Skoda Kodiaq, on the other hand, gets adaptive LED headlights.

Dimensions: Volkswagen Tiguan vs Skoda Kodiaq

Let’s begin with the Skoda Kodiaq dimensions. The Kodiaq measures 4699mm in length, 1882mm in width, and 1665mm in height, and it sits on a wheelbase of 2791mm.

On the other hand, the Volkswagen Tiguan’s dimensions measure 4509mm in length, 1839mm in width, and 1665mm in height, and it sits on a wheelbase of 2679mm.

With these figures, the Skoda Kodiaq is 190mm longer and has a 112mm longer wheelbase than the Volkswagen Tiguan. However, the Tiguan is 43mm broader than the Kodiaq, but they both retain the same height. Moreover, a longer wheelbase indicates better legroom.

As for the ground clearance, the Skoda Kodiaq has 192mm, while the Volkswagen Tiguan has approximately 200mm.

Now, coming to storage capacity, the Skoda Kodiaq’s boot space is 270 litres. No, don’t imagine the Kodiaq with a five-seater configuration. The Kodiaq comes in a seven-seater layout, due to which it has less storage capacity. But the Volkswagen Tiguan is only available with a five-seat. So, the Tiguan’s boot space is 615 litres without any seats folded.

So, these two SUVs have different utilities. The Kodiaq is for those buyers who travel with six to seven family members. And the Tiguan is ideal for four adults with a small kid or a pet accommodated in the middle rear seat.

 

Besides that, the Skoda Kodiaq also gets a wireless phone charger, whereas the Tiguan doesn’t.

As for safety, the Skoda Kodiaq has nine airbags since it’s a three-row SUV, so it needs that number of airbags. The Tiguan, on the other hand, has six airbags. In addition, both the German SUVs have achieved a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.

Apart from that, the Kodiaq shouldn’t be difficult to park since it gets a 360-degree camera while the Tiguan doesn’t. However, keeping that aside, both the SUVs come with brake assist, anti-theft alarm, anti-glare IRVM, tyre pressure monitor, auto-headlights, hill-descent control, and hill-assist, to name a few.

For entertainment, both the SUVs have an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment screen that is compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

They also get car-connect technology, which shows the vehicle’s data, such as upcoming service requirements, fuel level, current location, speed, etc.

Verdict

At the end of the day, both of these SUVs cater to different buyers. The Skoda Kodiaq is ideal for those who have large families since it is a three-row SUV. Despite being longer than the Tiguan, the Kodiaq can serve different purposes. Apart from that, Kodiaq’s base price is also on the higher side, but you will get what you pay. It will offer extra features and so on.

On the contrary, the Volkswagen Tiguan does miss out on some features compared to the Skoda Kodiaq. But the car won’t make you feel any inadequacy. It will do the job, and it may end up leaving a smile on your face.
