Wafer Butterfly Valve Installation Instructions

Installing a wafer butterfly valve includes instructions on how to install the valve in the piping. A wafer butterfly valve is normally mounted horizontally between two flanges of a pipe. 

1. Preparations before installation:

  1. Before installation, verify that the specifications and materials of the wafer butterfly valve are by the design.
  2. Before installation, remove dust, foreign objects, and debris to prevent malfunctions or leaks.
  3. Pipes should be properly suspend and fixe before installation to prevent undue stress on the valve after installation.
  4. It is essential that the two flange faces of the pipe are aligned, parallel, and concentric.
  5. During installation, no additional gaskets are require between the butterfly valve and the flange.
  6. In the connections between the butterfly valve, the check valve, or the pump, expansion joints are use so that the valve disc can move freely when it closes.

2. Installation steps:

  1. Before installation, open the valve disc by 10 degrees. (Same procedure as before disassembly).
  2. To adjust the distance between the two flanges, place the auxiliary screws at the appropriate positions.
  3. Place all remaining bolts and ensure that no contact is made with the butterfly valve’s flanges.
  4. When the butterfly valve and the flange are concentric and the disc switch position and inner diameter of the flange or adjacent parts are not blocked, the bolts are repeatedly Lock in a diagonally progressive manner until the flange contacts the valve body’s end face.
  5. The full opening and closing should confirm again after installation.

3. Operations:

  1. Clean the inside of the piping with clean water before starting the operation. Blow air into the piping to remove foreign objects.
  2. Viewing the angle indicator will help you avoid turning beyond the opening width and closing position.
  3. Switch operation is entirely govern by the angle indicator. If other hand tools are use to apply force, the angle indicator and the switch will be damage.
  4. The valve should open during the piping pressure test.
  5. Following the piping, the valve remains close for a long time, and it should switch on and off 1 to 2 times a month to avoid fixation.

Wafer Type Butterfly Valves Performance Advantages

One of the benefits of wafer-type butterfly valves is that their discs are install in the diameter direction of the pipe. During the rotation of the disc in the cylindrical passage of the butterfly valve body, the rotation angle is between 0° and 90°. It is at 90° that the butterfly valve is fully close. Wafer-type butterfly valves are generally install horizontally. Simple structure, small size, and lightweight characterize the wafer-type butterfly valves. In addition, it can quickly open and close by rotating 90°, and it is easy to use. Meanwhile, the valve has good fluid control characteristics.

With the wafer butterfly valves in the fully open position, the disc thickness is the only resistance when the medium passes through the valve body, so the pressure drop generated by the valve is small. As a result, the valve exhibits greater flow control characteristics. The butterfly valves have two types of seals: an elastomeric seal and a metal seal. For the former, the sealing ring can be mounted on the valve body or attached to the disc’s periphery.

A wafer butterfly valves with metal seals usually have a longer life than a valve with an elastomeric seal, but it is difficult to achieve a complete seal. Unlike elastomeric seals which have temperature-limited defects, metal seals can operate at higher temperatures.

When a butterfly valve is need to control flow, the main concern is the right valve size and type. Butterfly valves are particularly suitable for large diameter valves due to their structural principle. The butterfly valves are widely use not only in general industries such as petroleum, gas, chemical, and water treatment but also in the cooling water system of thermal power plants.
