After getting a few emails from readers struggling with the same issues, I thought I’d make a list of the most common mistakes people make when moving.
1. Thinking you have more time than you really do.
Whether you’ve never moved before, or it’s been a while, we often forget how long it takes to organize things. Now, some of you will not have a choice of time or the amount of time you need to plan, perhaps because of a job move or because of a personal emergency. For the rest of you, it’s all about organizing and timing your move to avoid last-minute panic.
Whenever you’re planning a big event, like a move, it’s best to think backward; determine your moving date, whether determined by a home sale or end of the rental period, or end of term. Once you have your moving date, count back at least eight weeks.
2. Do not ask for References from at least 3 Packers and Movers
Call as many packers and movers as possible, recommend at least five, and then do a thorough reference check.
