TALE OF THE VOW OF HINGLAJ MAA

Tale of the Vow of Hinglaj Maa

A poor Brahmin-Brahmini lived in a small village. They had a son. This Brahmin was very religious, but he was completely illiterate. So he did not know any rituals. He earned his livelihood by begging for flour from house to house. Often they had to go to bed hungry due to poverty. His house was also completely broken. In the rain, the three people would sit in a corner awake all night.

Brahmin-Brahmini used to bemoan their poverty. They thought that what sins we have committed in the previous life that we have to suffer so much poverty…! Both of them were more worried about their five-year-old son. They thought that if their son was born in the king’s house. He would be happier. By taking birth at the home of the poor like us, he will have to suffer all his life. Thus, the three people started to live their lives. In such a year there was very little rain in that village. Due to this, half of the population of the village left the village. Now flour that Brahmins used to get has stopped. There was enough flour to make two loaves.

One day the Brahmin said to his wife: “This much flour will not be able to feed the three of us, so if you say yes, I will go to the city for four or six months, do some labor and earn some money.” You two stay here. Instead of me you ask for flour and fill your stomach with it.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM AFTER THIS…?

After the departure of the Brahmin, the Brahmini brought flour and the mother and son used it for their livelihood. The Brahmin used to go to the Darbargarh of the village daily to ask for flour. The wife of the courtier gives her flour daily. It’s about a day. When the Brahmini went to Darbargarh to ask for flour, a feudal lord who was a guest of the darbar fell lustfully on this Brahmini. Brahmini looked beautiful in plain clothes, Jagirdar was fascinated by her, he called Khawas and got all the details about Brahmini.

At nightfall, this Jagirdar reached Brahmini’s house and made an unreasonable demand. Hearing this, Brahmini was shocked at first. Then she angrily said: “I am a poor needy, but I am not a dealer of body. Don’t you dare to put your hands on me!”

The Jagirdar thought that ‘intimidation will not work here.’ He offered money, but the Brahmini did not budge. She started shouting loudly, so the Jagirdar threatened her and said: “Tomorrow morning I will take of your respect in the whole village. Then where will you go?’ Saying this he started walking.

The Brahmini’s sleep was disturbed by the Jagirdar’s words. She thought that ‘wisdom is worthless before power. He is rich, so people will believe him and if he robs my honor by force, it will be my turn to commit suicide.’

WHAT WILL BRAHMINI DO…?

Thinking about disrespecting herself, the Brahmini left the village overnight. She woke up her five-year-old son and left. In the dark night, mother and son started walking on the path of the forest. Both of their legs started to get very thorny on the trail of Forest. When her child began to cry and plead with her mother: “Mother I can’t walk anymore. There is a thorn in the leg.” Then the brahmini sat under a tree to take a rest. His son fell asleep on the floor due to exhaustion. Brahmin also fell asleep next to him.

Suddenly Brahmini’s leg touches the poisonous snake which is passing next to her leg. The snake hissed and bit Brahmin’s leg. Brahmini screamed and sat down. She saw the snake rotting away. Gradually Brahmini began to feel dark. As she faced her own death, she began to worry about her son.

WILL BRAHMINI BE ALIVE…?

Tale of the Vow of Hinglaj Maa

The dawn spread. Brahmani fainted due to the effect of the poison. Suddenly, some saffron-clad monks came out as if God had looked at the mother-son. They lived in the forest. Their eyes fell on the sleeping child and the Brahmini. Brahmini was foaming at the mouth. Her whole body became like green glass. The monks brought the unconscious Brahmini and the child to their ashram. In the ashram, the Guru and the Guru’s wife got the Brahmini by kneading the medicine. Crushes neem foundation. She regained consciousness after repeated bouts of vomiting. With tears in her eyes, she thanked the Guru and the Guru’s wife and told her past story.

Guru’s wife stopped her in the ashram and said: “Daughter! Take a vow of Maa Hinglaj. Maa will definitely help you. All your sorrows will be removed.”

Guru’s wife told Brahmini the ritual of the Vow. Brahmini woke up early and took bath and decided to take a vow of Maa Hinglaj. After two Thursdays of the fast, the Brahmin received its benefit. A Brahmin working in the town went to the shop in the evening to pick up the goods of a merchant. He sat down on the porch of the shop to rest for a while due to exhaustion. The shop was small and very modest. There were hardly four or five customers who came to buy, but that day there was such a rush that the shopkeeper was stunned. It occurred to him that all this glory belonged to the man sitting in the room. The shopkeeper called the Brahmin and inquired about him. Brahmin introduced himself and said: “I am just sitting here to rest, I will leave now.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO BRAHMIN NEXT…?

Vanik stopped Brahmin in his house. The next day brahmin was sitting in the shop and the customer rush was high the whole day. Most of the store’s inventory was sold. One month’s earnings were made in one day. Hence the shopkeeper made him his partner. So the Brahmin was satisfied.

After six Thursdays, Vanik’s shop became like a big firm. Three-four workers also started to work there. After having some wealth, Brahmin remembers his wife and son. He told Vanik to go to the village himself. Vanik gave him leave.

On the completion of nine Thursdays, Brahmini decided to celebrate the fast. Guru’s wife asked her to invite nine women from the village. The Brahmini went to the village with his son on the day before the tenth Thursday, but the gates of the village were closed. She was surprised. She asked the gatekeeper and he said: “The king of this village died in the evening, he has no children. The door will be opened only after a new king takes over the throne in the morning.”

HOW CAN BRAHMINI GIVE AN INVITATION…?

The BrahminI thought that it is useless to go back without giving an invitation. She slept outside the door beside her son. In the morning, in the presence of the Pradhan, Senapati, and Rajpurohit and state officials, the female elephant was decorated according to tradition and a Kalash of Kanak was placed in its trunk. The female elephant walked and stood near the closed door. As Pradhan opens the door, the elephant comes out and pours the Kalash on the Brahmin’s son. Immediately the royal priestess came there and placed the royal crown on the child’s forehead. Everyone started cheering for a child king.

Seeing this, Brahmini was shocked. Tears of joy fell from her eyes. She started worshiping Hinglajama in her mind. Brahmini was decorated with ornaments and seated in the Palkhi. The ride left the market. There was a huge crowd on both sides of the road to see a Child King. There was also a Brahmin in that crowd. He saw his son and wife sitting in the Palkhi and ran overjoyed. As the Brahmini’s eyes suddenly fell on the Brahmin, she made the elephant stand, mother and son both got down and fell at the Brahmin’s feet. The general made the Brahmin sit in Palkhi too. The ride reached the Palace in no time. A Child King was placed on the throne. Brahmin and Pradhan took over the administration.

Instead of nine, the Brahmini took ninety-nine women to the ashram. Took the blessings of Guru and Guru’s wife. Then the brahmini celebrated Maa Hinglaj’s vow with great fanfare. She also built a temple of Ma Hinglaj in the town.
