When to visit Northern Norway?

Spring

The springtime in Norway is a magical time to visit because of how alive the landscape is. The snowfall is still substantial, and the days are becoming longer and brighter, making this the perfect time for “winter” activities. Keep in mind that the skiing opportunities in Northern Norway are best suited for off-piste and cross-country skiers due to the scarcity of official ski resorts in the region.

The bulk of the snow will have melted by the end of April, presenting a lush and flowering environment. In some parts of Northern Norway, like the Lofoten, spring may be chilly and bleak, and it isn’t until summer that flowers and flora truly begin to flourish. Summer

Prices in Northern Norway are at a premium from the beginning of June through the middle of September since summer is the most popular time to visit. Throughout the summer months, temperatures may range anywhere from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit) during the day. At the beginning of October, the temperature is still comfortable, but there is no one else there and I have the whole area to myself. Kristiansand, Norway’s fifth biggest city, is where I land after a nonstop flight from London Stansted, and I waste no time getting on the road in the direction of the west.

Autumn

Northern Norway is best in October. September and October offer many sunny days but fewer tourists. Fall’s changing leaves make the high plains and lush woodlands more beautiful.

With daylight till late in the afternoon, there’s still time for trekking and animal excursions. This is an excellent time to observe the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. Fall is a temperamental season, so take warm clothing and waterproof gear in case it rains.

Winter

Northern Norway is a snowy tundra throughout the winter months. The evenings are long and cold, as temperatures plummet below zero. In Tromso, the sun doesn’t rise between November and January. Bring a lot of garments and insulated gloves for cold hands.

Northern Norway’s winter noise levels decrease significantly (except over Christmas). You may be able to see the Northern Lights on cloudless nights. For hundreds of years, those responsible for maintaining the light had to haul coal all the way up there in order to keep it lit. In 1915, it was replaced with a structure made of iron and a light powered by electricity. It is operational even in the modern day, and it has both a dordle museum and an outstanding restaurant.
