Mahindra Scorpio-N: ‘N’ for Noble
Today, on June 27th, 2022, Mahindra and Mahindra will carry forward the legacy of the Mahindra Scorpio by introducing the Mahindra Scorpio-N. It will be the second generation of the Scorpio. Rewinding to 2002, a week before today’s date, on June 20th, the first generation of the Mahindra Scorpio made its debut in the Indian market. The first-gen Scorpio came in facelifted guise thrice, and still, it was one of the bestselling SUVs in the country. Fast-forward to 2022, the second-gen Mahindra Scorpio has had a complete makeover, but Mahindra has retained the Scorpio’s silhouette. That shows you won’t have to scratch your head to identify the model. So, what does the Mahindra Scorpio-N, “The Big Daddy of SUVs”, have on offer? Let’s find that out!
Exterior: Design and Dimensions
The Mahindra Scorpio-N’s exterior follows the new design and has grown in size. However, the roof height of the new Scorpio-N is now shorter by 125mm than the old Scorpio’s 1995mm. But, the rest of the Scorpio-N dimensions measure 4662mm in length and 2157mm in width, and it sits on a wheelbase of 2750mm. With these figures, the second-generation Scorpio is now 206mm longer, 337mm wider, and sits on a longer wheelbase by 70mm than its predecessor.
In terms of appearance, the new Scorpio-N now looks modern and stylish. It is a big step forward for the carmaker in designing the new SUV. The front fascia of the SUV gets a butch and in-your-face look, like its predecessor. The Scorpio-N gets a revamped front with a new grille with six vertical slats in chrome treatment, flanked by LED headlights. The lower section of the front bumper, on the other hand, gets a new pair of C-shaped LED DRLs with a chain-like design mesh grille in between.
The Mahindra Scorpio-N also slightly resembles the XUV700 from the front-three-quarter view. At the rear, one of the notable changes is the new tall tail-lights that may remind you of the fourth-generation Honda CR-V. The lowest section of the rear bumper now gets the chrome treatment as well, flanked by a pair of reflectors on either end. Furthermore, the lower part of the body has black cladding that gives it a rugged SUV look. It also gets a dual-tone brushed-metal alloy wheel. However, the wheel options may differ from variant to variant. In addition, the SUV also gets a shark-fin antenna.
Interior: Features and Design
The Mahindra Scorpio-N’s interior gets a fresh styling that now looks upmarket. It has a dual-tone interior with a black-brown colour scheme, paired with leather fabric and chrome inserts. The HVAC control panel beneath the infotainment unit remains the same as other Mahindra passenger vehicles.
As for entertainment, the Scorpio-N features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with an inbuilt AdrenoX. The AdrenoX is available on the PlayStore and App Store, which means you can access the vehicle’s data on your phone from anywhere. It also supports Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster, dual-zone HVAC, etc. Apart from those, it also gets a flat-bottom steering wheel for a better grip, a wireless charger, and a Sony music system, to name a few. In addition, the new Scorpio-N also gets a single-pane sunroof. It also boasts a rotary dial finished in piano black on the centre console for selecting the drive mode.
As for safety features, the Mahindra Scorpio-N has six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, a 360-degree camera, etc. Some other safety-and-entertainment features may get carried forward into the Scorpio-N from the XUV700 review, but that’s unlikely to happen. However, like other new-age Mahindra SUVs, the Scorpio-N’s safety rating can be jaw-dropping. In fact, Mr. Anand Mahindra, the Chairperson of Mahindra and Mahindra, did hint at the Scorpio-N’s ability to secure a five-star safety rating from the Global NCAP.
Under the hood: Engine and Transmission
The Mahindra Scorpio-N specifications will include a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. The petrol unit is the same as the Mahindra Thar and the XUV700, while the diesel unit will have two states of tune. The former will produce 202PS (370Nm and 380Nm), while the latter will have 132PS/300Nm and 175PS (370Nm and 400Nm).
Besides that, for improved driving dynamics, the new Scorpio-N gets first-in-segment Frequency Selective Damping (FSD). Stay tuned to the Mahindra Scorpio-N review to know the drivability of the new SUV.
The transmission offered in the Mahindra Scorpio-N gets a standard six-speed manual transmission. The 175PS diesel and petrol units will also get an optional 6-speed automatic transmission paired with an optional four-wheel drivetrain. However, all the powertrains get rear-wheel-drive as standard.
The Money Bits: Prices and Variants
The new Mahindra Scorpio-N has four broad trims: Z2, Z4, Z6, and Z8. The top-spec Z8 trim further branches into two variants: Z8L and Z8L (6S).
The Scorpio Classic (first-generation), now rebadged, continues to retail along with the Scorpio-N. However, the new SUV will become a premium alternative to the first generation. The Scorpio-N will have six-and-seven-seater configurations.
As for rivalry, the Mahindra Scorpio-N will directly lock horns with the Tata Harrier, MG Astor, Hyundai Alcazar, Hyundai Creta, the Mahindra XUV700, etc.
The XUV700’s price starts at Rs 13.18 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 24.58 lakh (ex-showroom). On the other hand, the old Scorpio’s price starts at Rs 13.54 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 18.62 lakh (ex-showroom). The new Mahindra Scorpio-N price starts at Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base model, Scorpio-N Z2, and goes up to Rs 19.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top model, Scorpio-N Z8L (6S) (at introductory prices).
To conclude, the Indian carmaker might discontinue a few variants of the Scorpio Classic to position the 2022 Scorpio. The second-generation Scorpio is one of the most anticipated SUVs, so only time will tell whether it has paved its way to success or not.
